The ultimate guide to traveling to Amsterdam

There are countless ways to get to Amsterdam! That means there are no excuses for not visiting us.

For all of you planning a fun trip to Amsterdam in the near future, we’ve created the ultimate guide to getting to us!

This list encompasses all the means of transport you’re likely to use: flying, railway, buses and traveling by boat or ferry.

Flying to Amsterdam (or the Netherlands)

The geographical position of the Netherlands makes it perfect for travelling to it by plane. Several passenger airports and a vast number of airlines connect the country to the whole world. If you’re travelling to Amsterdam for the first time, we would suggest picking a carrier that arrives to Amsterdam Airport Schiphol. If you don’t mind spending some time travelling to and from the airport (and enjoying the perfectly engineered Dutch landscapes along the way), pick the airline that flies to Eindhoven or Rotterdam/Den Haag.

Amsterdam Schiphol Airport

This is the primary international airport in the Netherlands. It’s the fifth busiest airport in Europe and it also gets rather crafty when dealing with your luggage.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X3XN-2OCME4

Amsterdam Schiphol Airport has six runways and hosts about 90 airlines flying to around 300 different destinations.

Schiphol is the hub for KLM (the Royal Dutch Airlines) and its affiliate KLM Cityhopper, as well as for Corendon Dutch Airlines, Martinair Cargo, Transavia and TUI Airlines Netherlands. The airport is also a European hub for Delta Air Lines and as a base for EasyJet and Vueling.

KLM connects Amsterdam to a huge number of world metropolises and is a go-to carrier if you’re looking for a long-distance flights. Tokyo, New York, Beijing and Moscow are just some of the cities among its destinations. KLM is the oldest airline in the world still operating under its original name: it was founded in 1919.

Easy Jet is a suggested choice if you’re looking for a cheap flight to and from the United Kingdom – London, Manchester, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Liverpool, and Bristol, as well as Northern Ireland, since easyJet also flies from Belfast to Amsterdam and the other way round.

787-900-c1-amsterdam-001

Transavia is a Dutch low-cost airline that flies from Schiphol to some nice vacation destinations like Lisbon, Gran Canaria, Pisa and Seville. It also flies from Amsterdam to Athens and Thessaloniki in Greece.

With TUI Airlines you can fly to Amsterdam all the way from Miami!

Getting to Schiphol

Amsterdam Airport Schiphol is located about 20 kilometres from Amsterdam. That means you can reach it in half an hour (or less!) from the city center.

How to get to Schiphol by train

There’s a train station located directly underneath the airport. That means Schiphol can be easily reached by train. The airport is connected to Amsterdam Central railway station in the city center (Dutch: Amsterdam Centraal), as well as Amsterdam South (Amsterdam Zuid) and the conference center Amsterdam RAI. Departures are very frequent and all the announcements in the trains stopping at Schiphol are given in English.

If you’re traveling from Schiphol to Amsterdam, you can buy the tickets at the ticket office in the airport’s main hall. There are also yellow ticket machines near the baggage claims. The machines accept credit cards with a 50 cent surcharge, Dutch debit cards, and some of them also accept coins. At the ticket office you can also buy the Amsterdam Travel Ticket, which includes return train travel between Schiphol and Amsterdam, plus free public public transport in the city.

How to get to Schiphol by bus

The bus line number 197, operated by Conexxion, departing from the bus station Elandsgracht takes you to the airport every 15 minutes. The round trip ticket costs 10 euros.

The same company also operates the Schiphol Hotel Shuttle.

Want a faster airport transfer that’s more fun? No matter which airport in the Netherlands you need transfer to or from, we can arrange you: a private minibus, a party bus, a FIRE TRUCK, or even a limo!

Contact us for the best rates.

Eindhoven Airport

Eindhoven Airport is the second largest airport in the Netherlands. It is located around 4 kilometers from Eindhoven. It is planned that the airport will expand to approximately 43 thousand aircraft movements and 5.5 million passengers by 2020. So it’s gonna get even more important!

Airlines operating the flights to and from this airport include Corendon, Luxair, TUI Netherlands, Vueling and WizzAir. Ryanair flies to Dublin and Manchester, and Jetairfly can take you all the way to Morocco!

How to get from the Eindhoven Airport to Amsterdam

In front of the airport, take a bus number 400 or 401 – either of them will take you to the Eindhoven train station. From there, there’s at least one train to Amsterdam per hour. Dutch intercity trains are comfortable double-deckers equipped with free WiFi. The journey usually takes around an hour and a half.

You can also book various shuttle services, but it is advised to do it in advance.

Rotterdam The Hague Airport

Rotterdam The Hague Airport serves, well… Rotterdam and the Hague. It’s located around 5 kilometres from Rotterdam and is a third largest airport in the Netherlands.

British Airways and CityJet fly from Rotterdam Den Haag to London while Flybe operates a line to Birmingham and Manchester. Other carriers include Jetairfly, Corendon, Turkish airlines and Dutch Transavia. The airport features scheduled flights to European metropolitan and leisure destinations, such as Barcelona, Palma de Mallorca, Rhodes and Antalya.

How to get from Rotterdam The Hague airport to Amsterdam

The airport is served by bus line 33. This line connects the Rotterdam Central train station, the airport, and the Meijersplein station.

You can take the bus from the airport to Rotterdam Central and then hop on a train to Amsterdam. You can also take the bus to the Meijersplein station and change to metro line E. The metro takes you to Den Haag Central or Rotterdam Central. Then you can change to another train taking you to Amsterdam.

Sounds complicated? Don’t worry, it’s not that bad. But you can always contact us to see how can we help with your transfer!

Other airports in the Netherlands

You’re far less likely to end up flying to one of the smaller airports (especially if it’s your first time in the Netherlands), but other Dutch airports worth mentioning are Maastricht Aachen Airport and Groningen Airport Eelde.

Maastricht Aachen Airport is located in the south of the Netherlands, serving the Dutch city of Maastricht and Aachen in Germany. This airport is the second largest cargo hub in the Netherlands. Passenger lines available from this airport are not many: Corendon flies to Antalya, Ryanair flies to Alicante, Wizz Air flies to Budapest and Katowice and Vueling takes you to Barcelona.

Groningen Airport Eelde is in the northeast of the Netherlands. From this airport Flybe operates a line to London. Other carriers flying from this airport are TUI, Transavia, Corendon and WizzAir.

These airports are further away from Amsterdam. We suggest using the Dutch travel planning service 9292 to explore the transfer options.

Traveling to Amsterdam by train

If you’ve read the whole section about getting to and from various airports in the Netherlands, you can also conclude that we’re the big fans of the Dutch railway.

The most of the long distance travel by public transport in the Netherlands is done by rail. The main passenger carrier is called Nederlandse Spoorwegen, meaning Dutch Railways and abbreviated NS. Be careful, their night service is limited. Their IC trains are two class double deckers with free internet on board, and they’re also quite fast, so getting from one part of the country to another is a breeze.

Amsterdam Centraal station hosting several international trains as well: French high-speed operator Thalys, intercity trains to Brussels, Antwerp, Berlin, Basel (Switzerland) and Vienna. There are also several regional cross border connections.

With Eurostar you can get from London to Amsterdam for as little as 50€ one-way. The trip takes less than five hours. Eurostar takes you to Brussels when you change to the Thalys’ train to Amsterdam.

Train stations in Amsterdam

The city has 9 train stations.

Amsterdam Centraal is in the center of the city. It’s on a 10 minutes walking distance from the Dam square. In front of the station you can catch trams and metro, and in the back – regional busses and free ferries that take you to Amsterdam North.

Amsterdam Muidepoort is in the Amsterdam East (Amsterdam Oost). Amsterdam Amstel is the station next to the modern business towers at the bank of the Amstel river.

Amsterdam Sloterdijk is a major railway junction situated to the west of Amsterdam Centraal. It’s on a railway lines to Haarlem and Schiphol Airport. In the northwest of Amsterdam you’ll find the Lelylaan Station.

At the south of the city there are two stations: Amsterdam RAI is where you’re supposed to get off if you’re going to the RAI Convention Centre. Amsterdam Zuid (which means Amsterdam South) is near the World Trade Center. Today it’s the heart of the modern Zuidas business district . It is also the gateway for the VU University campus located just south of the station.

In Southeast, there are two neighboring stations – Duivendrecht and Amsterdam Bijlmer Station. These stations are at the opposite sides of Amsterdam ArenA, but Bijlmer Station also neighbors to Heineken Music Hall and the Villa Arena shopping mall.

Traveling to Amsterdam by boat

The Dutch have been a sea-faring nation for centuries, Amsterdam still has millions of visitors arriving by boat each year.

The passenger terminal in Amsterdam. Flickr / Hugo

The passenger terminal in Amsterdam. Flickr / Hugo

The Passenger terminal in Amsterdam is a striking building with a 600 meter long quay, large reception halls, touring car terminals and an underground parking. The tram number 26 stops right in front of it – the stop is called Muziekgebouw.

Ferries from Newcastle stop at the port of IJmuiden at the outskirts of the city. IJmuiden is located at the mouth of the North Sea Canal to Amsterdam. The company operating the ferries, DFDS Seaways, also provides a coach service that gets you to the Amsterdam Centraal railway station.

Stena Line operates a ferry from Harwich (in Essex, England) to Hoek van Holland (the Hook of Holland). Hoek van Holland is a town in the municipality of Rotterdam. A ferry service to eastern England has been operating from the Hook since 1893, with only the two World Wars interrupting it. The rail links between Hoek van Holland and Amsterdam are excellent and the journey will take you about one hour and 45 minutes.

There’s also a ferry connecting Rotterdam to Hull in Yorkshire. The ferry terminal is in Rotterdam’s Europoort. The line is operated by P&0, which also offers a coach service between Rotterdam Europoort and Rotterdam Central railway station. The tickets need to be booked in advance. From Rotterdam Centraal you can easily come to Amsterdam by train or using a transfer service.

How you’re going to get around Amsterdam once you get there mainly depends on the length of your stay, but also on the things you’re here to experience. Amsterdam’s main public transport operator is GVB. At the tourist information office in front of the Amsterdam Centraal you can buy the I Amsterdam City Card – a combined ticket for Amsterdam’s museums and public transport valid for a day, two or three. NS and GVB together offer the Amsterdam Travel Ticket.

If you want to do something completely Dutch and experience the city like a local, rent a bike! Biking around the canals is the best way to see the magnificent historic waterways.

Traveling to Amsterdam by bus

In case trains, buses and boats are not enough, there are also multiple coach lines driving to and from Amsterdam.

Megabus offers low cost fares from London to Amsterdam and other way round, stopping in France and Belgium on the way. The buses board on a ferry to cross to Great Britain and that’s included in the price. Megabus stops at Sloterdijk and Park&Ride Zeeburg. You can take the train get to and from Sloterdijk. Zeeburg is connected to the Amsterdam Centraal by the tram line 26.

Amsterdam Sloterdijk is also a terminal for OUIBUS and Flixbus. OUIBUS is a French operator serving Aix-en-Provence, Amsterdam, Brussels, Genoa, Lille, London, Lyon, Marseille, Milan, Nice, Paris, Paris Charles de Gaulle airport and Turin. Flixbus operates between Amsterdam and a variety of German towns and cities, as well as Copenhagen, Brussels, Prague and Milan!

Eurolines is based at station Duivendrecht. Eurolines can take you to Amsterdam from London, Hythe, Dover and Gillingham but also from various cities in 18 other countries! Except at the Duivendrecht station, they have an office in the center of Amsterdam, at Rokin 38A.

10 excellent reasons to visit Amsterdam

10

Amsterdam is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Europe. Why is that so? Well… The reasons are many! We’ve listed 15 great reasons to visit our vibrant city!

History, localities, art and various temptations all blend together in the irresistible city of Amsterdam. Whatever you’re looking for – you’ll find it here. Amsterdam offers a diverse plate to be served just how you want it.

1. Art

Amsterdam is steeped in cultural history. If you like classics, you can visit the Rijksmuseum, the Van Gogh Museum, or the Hermitage Museum. If you’re into contemporary and modern art, we have Stedelijkmuseum, which has always been among the world’s most cutting-edge contemporary art venues.

Flickr / Roman Boed

Flickr / Roman Boed

There’s a lot more to chose from: Amsterdam has the highest museum density in the world!

And don’t even get us started about architecture! Wherever you look you’ll see lovely old houses! 17th and 18th century architecture in the center of Amsterdam also means that the center is free of skyscrapers.

2. The Red Light District

The Red Light District is one of the first things that come to your mind when you say “Amsterdam”.

Flickr / Nicole Pullin

The prostitutes in the red-lit windows attract a lot of tourists (beware, you’re not supposed to take photos). If you want something more than sightseeing, in this area you’ll also find peep shows, brothels, sex shops and sex museums.  It is definitely worth a visit just for the experiences available on every corner – of course, if you are old enough.

3. Nightlife

The nightlife in Amsterdam is legendary! Do you know that Amsterdam has more than 1500 bars and cafes?

Leidseplein and Rembrandtpein are the areas where you’ll find the largest numbers of tightly paced venues. You may also wander over to the Red Light District and Spui for more options. If you just want to chill, we recomend the neighborhood of Jordaan.

4. Festivals

Amsterdammers hold around 300 different festivals a year.

Flickr / Paula Abrahao

Flickr / Paula Abrahao

They’re not just music festivals. You may also find yourself celebrating art, flowers, pregnancy or poetry. The music festivals that are held tend to attract world famous DJ’s.

5. Canals

Amsterdam has more than 100 kilometres of canals. The three main ones are Herengracht, Prinsengracht and Keizersgracht. They were dug in during the Dutch Golden Age in 17th century. The center of Amsterdam was built according to the 17th century plans – if it’s not an example of good planning, we don’t know what is!

Flickr / SF Brit

Flickr / SF Brit

A lot of the city’s life happens on the canals. People still live on house boats, a lot of different festivals happen on the water and every year on Kingsday the canal ring turns into a hell of a party.

One of the best ways to enjoy Amsterdam is, of course, to book a canal cruise or to throw a boat party.

6. Beer

The whole Benelux region is famous for its beer, and it’s certainly no accident.

Flickr / Sara P

Flickr / Sara P

The beers in Amsterdam are easily available and offered in huge demand and variety. We would always suggest trying a Belgian or a Dutch beer, but here you can also find the beers you’re unlikely to come across while grocery shopping – such as, hipster brews from America or even Australia.

In Amsterdam you’ll find craft breweries like Brouwerij ‘t Ij, atmosferic pubs with huge selections of bottled, canned and tap beer. If you want to drink only Dutch beer, go to the bar called Arendsnest – they have 30 different kinds of beer on tap and more than a hundred different bottled ones. They say they have at least one beer from each and every brewery in the Netherlands.

7. Weed

Although the Dutch wouldn’t like if marijuana is your only reason to visit Amsterdam, you’re probably gonna find the coffee shops at least a bit interesting.  Amsterdam drug laws evolved the same way as laws in other countries, but the solutions taken in the Netherlands, differ from the rest of the world. The Dutch think that you can decide for yourself about everything that can harm your health.

Flickr / Nate2b

Flickr / Nate2b

Coffee shops have been around since the seventies. You’ll find around 200 of them in the city, so finding a nearest one shouldn’t be a problem. An individual cannot buy more than 5 grams of weed per day.

Official Dutch coffee shops have a green and white licence sticker in the window. Coffee shops usually don’t sell alcohol.

So if you’re here for the weed – just act responsibly and have fun!

8. Food

The Dutch are not really famous for the haute cuisine, but the Netherlands is a home to warm, hearty dishes, great cheese and some mouth watering (and sinful!) sweets.

Around Amsterdam you can sample many different kinds of Dutch cheese (speaking of cheese, there is, conveniently, the one called Old Amsterdam). If you like pancakes, try poffertjes. Nobody can resist a syrup waffle with their coffee or tea. You should also try authentic Flemish fries and a totally Dutch snack – haring with pickles and onions.

Flickr / Roman Boed

Flickr / Roman Boed

Did you know that gin evolved from jenever? Jenever is a spirit still very popular in the region – look for a prooflokaal and try as many different kinds as you can. The older jenever is like whiskey, while the younger ones come in a wide variety of flavors.

9. Shopping

Although some would argue that some global brands seem to be ignoring the Netherlands all together, shopping in Amsterdam surely has its charms.

The Nine Streets, the main shopping area in the city center, host everything from exclusive boutiques to antique shops.  Next to the Dam Square you’ll find the huge department store called De Bijenkorf. The P.C Hooftstraat is a home to the brand stores of Chanel, Louis Vuitton, DKNY, and Mulberry. And this is just a tip of the ice berg!

If you like thrift shopping, Amsterdam also has a lot of flea markets. Try the one at Waterlooplein, or a monthly IJhallen, the biggest flea market in Holland.

10. Amsterdam is safe

Amsterdam is one of the safest cities in the world. That probably sound like a totally-not-too-important-thing, but knowing that makes everything else way much easier. You can escape to Amsterdam with a piece of mind which allows more room for having fun.

Have you been to Amsterdam yet? What’s your main reason to visit this awesome city?

How we did it: 20th anniversary of Robomow in Amsterdam

We created a custom package for the celebration of the 20 year anniversary of the international company “Robomow”. Where fun meets business and sightseeing meets some serious celebration – you’ll find our friendly guides.

This summer, “Friendly robotics – Robomow“, the international company based in Israel, has celebrated it’s 20th anniversary. And they came to the vibrant Dutch capital to do this! The organisation of the event was trusted to FunAmsterdam. Keep reading to see how did we do it!

Robomow

Robomow_logo[1]“Robomow” is a company with a vision. Their ideal of the future is having house robots that will do all of the boring chores for us. That’s why they make robots that move the lawns!

Their robotic mowers are long lasting, rain proof and easy to maintain. And the best part is – you get to control them with your smartphone!

The Celebration

IMG_6165

Friendly Robotics wanted to celebrate their 20th anniversary as befits. They also wanted to do something fun, and just a boring ol’ formal dinner wouldn’t cut it. Also, they wanted to explore and to get to know the real Amsterdam.

Challenge accepted!

Custom package

We created a custom package for RoboMow to meet their specific needs.

IMG_6147

They’re a successful international company so we’ve booked them one of Amsterdam’s finest hotels. They wanted to get to know our city so we gathered our top guides. They wanted to participate in a collective activity so we drove out our beer bikes. They wanted and authentic Dutch experience – and what’s a better way to get to know a place than through its food – so we arranged multiple tastings of authentic dutch delicacies. And to wrap it all up, we topped that with a big lunch and a nice business dinner at the restaurants overlooking the canals!

The Robomow Day in Amsterdam

We hosted a group of 48 RoboMow employees. We booked them a hotel with a conference room but hey – the main action was happening outside! On the day of the celebration we picked them up with our beer bikes (it took three bikes, if you want the deets) and took them on a tour of the city. While pedaling, they sampled some great Dutch cheese. Along the way we stopped for 6 food tastings. Among other delicacies they got to try poffertjes, salted herring, flemmish fries and the famous Dutch apple pie!

IMG_6156

We also brought them to the most famous street market in Amsterdam – Albert Cuypmarkt. The always vibrant market invited them for a real Amsterdam experience – with its colorful stalls, a vast variety of merchandise and even more of the Dutch foodie goodness. Freshly baked syrup waffles, anyone?

IMG_6219

After the bikes we went to a typical Dutch restaurant in the beautiful and picturesque Jordaan neighborhood.

The group afterwards returned to the hotel to get ready for the main event – a celebratory dinner! The venue for the dinner was chosen carefully so that it was just a short walk away. The dinner was a three-course meal with unlimited drinks at a historical location behind the Dam Square.

Of course, everything from the bikes to the restaurant we went at the evening was branded in Robomow colors and slogans.

IMG_6202

How much did it all cost?

Well, we won’t give away everything, but the 3 hours of the beer bike tour, including the divers, a walking tour and 6 snacks was 70 euros per person. A three choice meal costed 35€ per person.

We had great fun hanging out with RoboMow. crew! We wish them at least another 20 years of success and we hope we’ll meet again in Amsterdam.

Meet our team! Charlotte: "In Amsterdam anything is possible!"

Our French translator Charlotte talks about her favorite places in Amsterdam, how should a stripper look like and where to find the best sandwich ever!

At Fun Amsterdam, we offer various types of activities to suit many different travel styles. How do we do it? By having an awesome team of fun-loving individuals who always add something of their own to the mix!

In this series of posts you’ll get to know the members of our team – the faces of Fun Amsterdam.

Meet Charlotte! She’s a 23-year-old Frenchie. She’s just got a master’s degree in Global communication of brands and companies. At Fun Amsterdam, she manages the content for the French version of our website.

Amsterdam if fun because in Amsterdam anything is possible!

“I love to travel so it was natural for me to get a job in a tour company in Amsterdam”, says Charlotte as we’re walking through the picturesque streets of the Amsterdam’s canal belt.

Why do you think Amsterdam is fun?

Amsterdam is a city where anything is possible! Dutch people are super open-minded but serious, and legislation allows lots of things! So, it will be stupid not to enjoy it! If you’re thinking about a bahcelor party in Amsterdam – it will be crazy, for sure!

If you could choose only one tour or activity we offer, which one would that be and why?

It’s a no-brainer! Male striptease on a boat. First, you have a special point of view – it’s more original and local to see Amsterdam from the water. Then, there’s a hot guy. For me, he would have to be tall with brown hair and blue eyes… that type makes me on fire!

What is your favorite place in Charlotte of Fun Amsterdamthe city?

I love walking around the shopping district called The Nine Streets, shopping and eating near a canal.

What is your favorite place to eat?

I was walking around my neighborhood when I’ve seen this guy going out of a shop with a sandwich that looked amazing. I immediately went inside to discover a typical Dutch shop that sells cheese and ham. The shop is old – it has been there for at least 50 years, it’s wonderful,  authentic, and very, very local. It’s called De Kaasboer and it’s in the Jordaan neighborhood. The address is Tweede Tuindwarsstraat 3. Trust me, they make the best sandwiches in the whole of Amsterdam!
